Devices Pre-Installed with Windows

Before using operating system copies from this site for install, re-install or recovery on devices with pre-installed operating systems, see your device manufacturer or reseller for the customized drivers and applications specific to your machine. Using operating systems copied from this site for install, re-install or recovery may void your support agreement with your manufacturer or reseller. Any drivers or programs that were installed by the device manufacturer or reseller may be removed during installation.

Windows 8.1 & 10: The product key may be embedded on the motherboard or may be on the Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the bottom of the device.

Windows 7: For devices that came with Windows 7 pre-installed, the product key may be on the Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the bottom of the device.

For more information about Windows product keys and genuine Microsoft products, see What is a product key and How to Tell site.

The most common issue is the use of a product key for a product not currently supported by the site such as an Upgrade key, an MSDN key, product keys for pre-installed media or an Enterprise edition key. For access to MSDN products or Enterprise edition visit the MSDN Portal or the Volume Licensing Service Center. Upgrades and pre-installed media are not currently supported by the tools on the site.

If you believe you have a valid product key and are still receiving an error, please contact Support.

Not all “system builder” products for Windows 7 are currently available on the site. We are working to add more, but for now, we suggest you contact Support.

Yes, but you’ll need your product key. Go to the Academic Products download page and select the version of Windows to begin.

The media creation tool (Download Tool Now button) will not run on a Mac device. You can still download an ISO file with one of these options: Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. This will give you a web-based download option that should run on most browsers.

You can download an ISO file copy of Windows to use with a non-Windows device. Follow these links for Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 ISO download options best for non-Windows devices.

The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer’s processor (also called a CPU) handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system. Not all devices can run the 64-bit versions of Windows.

If you have a Windows operating system installed, open File Explorer or This PC.

  1. Right click on This PC or Computer in the navigation pane and select Properties.
  2. In the System information screen, find the System type entry. This will indicate what type of processor your device has.

If you do not have an operating system installed, you should refer to the documentation that came with the device. Most device and processor manufacturers also provide information regarding processor capabilities on their websites.

For other options and more information on Windows 7 visit the Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit FAQ page or download and run the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

After you’ve created the installation media, do one of the following to install Windows:

  • Connect the USB flash drive to the PC where you want to install Windows, browse to it in File Explorer, and then open the setup.exe file. Follow the instructions in setup.
  • If your PC is set up to boot from a USB drive, connect the USB flash drive to the PC where you want to install Windows, restart (reboot) it, and then follow the instructions in setup.
  • If your PC is set up to boot from the DVD drive, insert the DVD into your PC, restart (reboot) it, and then follow the instructions in setup.

You can use the ISO file to create bootable media for installation or recovery. You can also install Windows on your current device by opening the ISO file, selecting the Setup and following the instructions.

To create bootable media such as a bootable USB drive or DVD, you will need an ISO burning or mounting software. We recommend always using a blank USB or blank DVD because contents may be deleted when creating a bootable image.

If you are creating media from a Windows 8.1 machine, you can also right click the ISO file and select either Mount to mount the image to the current device or a USB drive or select Burn disc image to burn a DVD (this requires a DVD burner and a blank DVD).

If you are creating a DVD from a Windows 7 machine, you can right click the ISO file and select Burn disc image or Open with, then Windows Disc Image Burner to burn a DVD (this requires a DVD burner and a blank DVD). This DVD can be used to install media and is bootable.

If you are creating media from a Windows 7 machine, you may need to use a separate burning or mounting software such as the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Before using this tool, be sure to read the Information and Instructions. You can also right click the ISO file and select Burn disc image to burn a DVD (this requires a DVD burner and a blank DVD).

You can also visit Microsoft Community to research other options.

To use the bootable media, make sure the device you will be installing on is set to boot from a USB or DVD. Then connect the USB or insert the DVD, restart (reboot) the device and then follow the instructions in setup.

Windows 8.x and Windows 10 Pre-installed: You can download and use media from this site on your device and it will install correctly. In most cases you will not be asked for a product key during installation, the product key is included on the motherboard. However, after installation, the device will NOT contain the specialized drivers and software that came pre-installed from your manufacturer. *If you are prompted for a product key during installation, refer to How do I find my Windows product key? question above.

Windows 7 Pre-installed: We strongly recommend you contact the device manufacturer for support.

If you are looking for MSDN products or Enterprise editions visit the MSDN Portal or the Volume Licensing Service Center.

The media from this site can be used to create bootable USB drives and DVDs which will allow you to access recovery tools.

Top Frequently Asked Questions

How do I notify the IRS my address has changed?

Answer:

There are several ways to tell us your address has changed:

Methods to Change Your Address

Send us a signed written statement with your:

  • full name
  • old address
  • new address
  • social security number, ITIN, or EIN

Mail your signed statement to the address where you filed your last return.

Tell us in person or by telephone. We’ll need you to verify your identity and the address we have on file for you. Please have ready your:

  • full name
  • new address
  • old address
  • date of birth
  • social security number, ITIN or EIN

We may request additional information to verify your identity.

If you filed a joint return, and are still residing with your spouse, both you and your spouse should provide your names, social security numbers, and signatures on the form or statement.

If you filed a joint return and you now have separate addresses, each of you should notify us of your new, separate address.

Authorized representatives filing a form or written statement to change an address for a taxpayer must attach a copy of their power of attorney or Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative. Unauthorized third parties can’t change a taxpayer’s address.

Changes of address through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) may update your address of record on file with us based on what they retain in their National Change of Address (NCOA) database. However, even when you notify the USPS, not all post offices forward government checks, so you should still notify us.

For changes of address relating to an employment tax return, we issue confirmation notices (Notices 148A and 148B) for the change to both the new and former address.

It can generally take four to six weeks after receipt for a change of address request to fully process.

Is there an age limit on claiming my child as a dependent?

Answer:

To claim your child as your dependent, your child must meet either the qualifying child test or the qualifying relative test:

  • To meet the qualifying child test, your child must be younger than you and either younger than 19 years old or be a „student” younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year.
  • There’s no age limit if your child is „permanently and totally disabled” or meets the qualifying relative test.

In addition to meeting the qualifying child or qualifying relative test, you can claim that person as a dependent only if these three tests are met:

  1. Dependent taxpayer test
  2. Citizen or resident test, and
  3. Joint return test

How much income can an unmarried dependent student make before he or she must file an income tax return?

Answer:

An unmarried dependent student must file a tax return if his or her earned or unearned income exceeds certain limits. To find these limits, refer to Dependents under Who Must File in Publication 501, Dependents, Standard Deduction and Filing Information. You can also refer to Do I Need to File a Tax Return? to see if your income requires you to file.

Even if you don’t have to file a federal income tax return, you should file if you can get money back (for example, you had federal income tax withheld from your pay or you qualify for a refundable tax credit). See Who Should File in Publication 501 for more examples.

Can I receive a tax refund if I am currently making payments under an installment agreement or payment plan for another federal tax period?

Answer:

No, one of the conditions of your installment agreement is that the IRS will automatically apply any refund (or overpayment) due to you against taxes you owe. Because your refund isn’t applied toward your regular monthly payment, continue making your installment agreement payments as scheduled.

If your refund exceeds your total balance due on all outstanding tax liabilities including accruals, you’ll receive a refund of the excess unless you owe certain other past-due amounts, such as state income tax, child support, a student loan, or other federal nontax obligations which are offset against any refund. For more information on these non-IRS refund offsets, you can call the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) at 800-304-3107 (toll-free).

To qualify for head of household filing status, do I have to claim my child as a dependent?

Answer:

Generally, to qualify for head of household filing status, you must have a qualifying child or a dependent. However, a custodial parent may be eligible to claim head of household filing status based on a child even if he or she released a claim to exemption for the child. See Noncustodial parent is claiming an exemption for my child; do I still qualify as head of household?

What should I do if I made a mistake on my federal return that I’ve already filed?

Answer:

It depends on the type of mistake you made:

  • Many mathematical errors are caught during the processing of the tax return and corrected by the IRS, so you may not need to correct these mistakes.
  • If you didn’t claim the correct filing status or you need to change your income, deductions, or credits, you should file an amended or corrected return using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

When filing an amended or corrected return:

  • Include copies of any forms and/or schedules that you’re changing or didn’t include with your original return.
  • To avoid delays, file Form 1040-X only after you’ve filed your original return. Generally, for a credit or refund, you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you timely filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
  • Allow the IRS up to 16 weeks to process the amended return.

What is a split refund?

Answer:

A split refund lets you divide your refund, in any proportion you want, and direct deposit the funds into up to three different accounts with U.S. financial institutions. Use Part I of Form 8888, Allocation of Refund (Including Savings Bond Purchases) to request to have your refund split. The accounts must be in your name. You may also use part or all of your refund to buy up to $5,000 in paper or electronic U.S. Series I Savings Bonds for yourself or someone else by using Part II of Form 8888.

How do I know if I have to file quarterly individual estimated tax payments?

Answer:

Generally, you must make estimated tax payments for the current tax year if both of the following apply:

  • You expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for the current tax year after subtracting your withholding and refundable credits.
  • You expect your withholding and refundable credits to be less than the smaller of:
    • 90% of the tax to be shown on your current year’s tax return, or
    • 100% of the tax shown on your prior year’s tax return. (Your prior year tax return must cover all 12 months.)

There are special rules for:

  • Farmers and fishermen
  • Certain household employers
  • Certain higher income taxpayers
  • Nonresident aliens

I retired last year and started receiving social security payments. Do I have to pay taxes on my social security benefits?

Answer:

Social security benefits include monthly retirement, survivor and disability benefits. They don’t include supplemental security income (SSI) payments, which aren’t taxable. The net amount of social security benefits that you receive from the Social Security Administration is reported in Box 5 of Form SSA-1099, Social Security Benefit Statement, and you report that amount on line 5a of Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return or Form 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors (PDF). The taxable portion of the benefits that’s included in your income and used to calculate your income tax liability depends on the total amount of your income and benefits for the taxable year. You report the taxable portion of your social security benefits on line 5b of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.

Your benefits may be taxable if the total of (1) one-half of your benefits, plus (2) all of your other income, including tax-exempt interest, is greater than the base amount for your filing status.

The base amount for your filing status is:

  • $25,000 if you’re single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er),
  • $25,000 if you’re married filing separately and lived apart from your spouse for the entire year,
  • $32,000 if you’re married filing jointly,
  • $0 if you’re married filing separately and lived with your spouse at any time during the tax year.

If you’re married and file a joint return, you and your spouse must combine your incomes and social security benefits when figuring the taxable portion of your benefits. Even if your spouse didn’t receive any benefits, you must add your spouse’s income to yours when figuring on a joint return if any of your benefits are taxable.

Generally, you can figure the taxable amount of the benefits in Are My Social Security or Railroad Retirement Tier I Benefits Taxable?, on a worksheet in the Instructions for Form 1040 and 1040-SR or in Publication 915, Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits. However, if you made contributions to a traditional Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) for 2020 and you or your spouse were covered by a retirement plan at work or through self-employment, use the worksheets in Publication 590-A, Contributions to Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), to see if any of your social security benefits are taxable and to figure your IRA deduction.

Read detailed offer terms of use for the Azure free account.

Who is eligible for the Azure free account?

The Azure free account is available to all new customers of Azure. If you’ve never tried or paid for Azure before, you’re eligible.

Do I pay anything to start with the Azure free account?

No. Starting is free, plus you get a $200 credit you can spend during the first 30 days.

Do I have to pay something after 30 days?

At the end of your first 30 days, you can continue using your free products after you upgrade your account to a pay-as-you-go pricing and remove the spending limit. If you stay within the service quantities included for free, you won’t have to pay anything. The $200 free credit acts as a spending limit.

What happens once I use my $200 free credit or I’m at the end of 30 days?

We’ll notify you so you can decide if you want to upgrade to pay-as-you-go pricing and remove the spending limit. If you do, you’ll have access to all the free products. If you don’t, your account and products will be disabled, and you’ll need to upgrade to resume usage.

What does it mean to upgrade my account?

When you sign up for an Azure free account, you get a $200 credit that acts as a spending limit—that is, in the first 30 days, any usage of resources beyond the free products and quantities will be deducted from the $200 credit. When you’ve used up the $200 credit or 30 days have expired (whichever happens first), you’ll have to upgrade to a pay-as-you-go account. This automatically removes the spending limit so you can continue to get access to all the free products included in the free account. With the spending limit removed, you pay for what you use beyond the free amounts and this is charged to the card you provided.

What happens with the products if I don’t upgrade?

If you decide not to upgrade at the end of 30 days or once you’ve used up your $200 credit (whichever happens first), any products you’ve deployed will be decommissioned and you won’t be able to access them. You can always come back within the next 30 days to upgrade your account.

How do I know how much of the $200 I’ve used and how much I have left?

Your remaining credit is shown at the top of the management portal, so you always know where you’re at.

What happens to my unused credit if I upgrade before the end of 30 days?

When you upgrade your account to pay-as-you-go pricing, any free credit you have remaining will still be available for the full 30 days after you started your free account. There’s nothing to lose if you upgrade early. When you upgrade, you get to keep building with free products. Beyond the free amounts, you only pay for what you use each month. You can cancel any time.

What do I need to sign up for a free account?

All you need is a phone number, a credit card, and a GitHub account or Microsoft account username (formerly Windows Live ID).

Do I need a Microsoft account to sign up for Azure?

You can sign up with your Microsoft account, or you can use your GitHub account and take your code all the way from repositories to deployment.

How does the signup process work using GitHub?

You can now sign up using the “Sign-in options” link on the Azure sign-in page. When you, as a GitHub user, first sign into a Microsoft product with your credentials, GitHub will ask for your permission to consent. GitHub will share with Microsoft the name and public and private email addresses on your GitHub account to check if you already have a Microsoft account. If it looks like you already have an account, you’ll have the option to use that account and add your GitHub account as a login method. Otherwise, a new account will be created and linked to the GitHub account.

What GitHub information will be shared with Microsoft?

Microsoft is committed to user privacy. The request for profile information is used to check for the presence of an existing Microsoft account and to create an account if needed. Once your information enters the Microsoft ecosystem, it’s protected by the Microsoft terms of service and isn’t shared without your permission. Connecting a GitHub identity to a Microsoft account will not give Microsoft any code access.

Why do I need to provide a credit card and phone number?

One of the ways we keep prices low is to verify that account holders are real people, not bots or anonymous troublemakers. We use the phone number and credit card for identity verification. We don’t charge your credit card anything, but you may see a one-dollar verification hold on your credit card account, which is removed within three to five days.

What happens at the end of the 12 months of free products?

For 12 months after you upgrade your account, certain amounts of popular products for compute, networking, storage, and databases are free. After 12 months, any of these products you may be using will continue to run, and you’ll be billed at the standard pay-as-you-go rates.

Can the Azure free account be used for production or only for development?

The Azure free account provides access to all Azure products and does not block customers from building their ideas into production. The Azure free account includes certain products—and specific quantities of those products—for free. To enable your production scenarios, you may need to use resources beyond the free amounts. You’ll be billed for those additional resources at the pay-as-you-go rates.

Is the free account, 12 months of free products, and $200 credit available internationally?
